Hello,
I am Baylee Mitchell, a 20-year-old full-term missionary living and working in Mae Sai, Thailand. As a volunteer with the Victory Mae Sai organization, I volunteer to teach English at a local school and am working to start a preschool program. I also offer private English lessons during the week and hold a Saturday class from 1-3 PM.
My Story
Hey there, as the oldest of three children. I am a fourth-generation YWAMer and missionary. Raised in a Christian family, I accepted Jesus into my heart when I was five but started truly pursuing Him when I was eight. It was then that I was baptized and received the call to missions.
Throughout my adolescent and teen years, I participated in several mission trips. At ten, I attended Sun Valley Indian School, and at fourteen, I went on a mission trip to Haiti. I began volunteering with youth programs, Sunday school, and the nursery as soon as I was old enough. Additionally, I served at a local food bank and homeless shelter, providing food to the homeless and sorting food on shelves.
After graduating high school, I completed a six-month Discipleship Training School (DTS) through Youth With A Mission (YWAM). This entry-level course, which is required for other programs within YWAM, involved three months of deepening my relationship with Christ during the lecture phase and learning skills for the mission field. The subsequent three months were spent overseas, applying those skills.
During the lecture phase in Oakhurst, we evangelized at a local college in Fresno and grocery stores, sharing the message of Jesus and praying for people. We also served at a local non-profit called Helping Hands, cleaning the facility and praying for new mothers and their babies. When I was eighteen, during my DTS, I recommitted my life to Jesus as an adult and was baptized at a beach in Santa Cruz.
The outreach portion of my DTS took place in Thailand. We spent two weeks in a village in Chiang Mai, where we conducted house visits, kids ministry at local schools, and helped with Christmas programs, leading worship and performing the Toy Maker skit. In Mae Sai, we did kids ministry, cleaned the church, and worked with a local soccer ministry.
After my DTS, I attended a Bible Core Course in Norway, a three-month YWAM program where we studied the Bible and learned how to teach, preach, and lead small groups. We had two hours of lectures daily, supplemented with small groups, independent studies, and other activities. We spent at least ten hours a day studying scripture, and my school leaders made it engaging and fun, deepening my love for God and scripture.
Upon returning to America, I spent two months raising support and preparing to move to Thailand. On October 6, 2023, I moved to Thailand and have been there since. I currently volunteer as a teacher with an organization called Victory Mae Sai. I am learning the language two hours a day, four days a week, and teaching private lessons Monday through Friday, along with a two-hour group class on Saturdays. On Fridays, I lead an English club at a local Thai school, engaging students in games and conversation activities. We hope to start a preschool at the English center soon. Additionally, I am taking online college courses to pursue a teaching degree.
In conclusion, my journey from early childhood to my current work in Thailand has been shaped by my commitment to faith and missions. Each step, from local volunteering to international missions, has prepared me for the work I am doing now and the future goals I hope to achieve.
